Course Information
Description A foundation studio course exploring drawing with emphasis on descriptive, expressive and conceptual approaches. Students will learn to see and interpret a variety of subjects while using diverse materials and techniques which promote the appreciation of cultural expression. Course work will facilitate a dialogue in which students will engage in critical analysis and begin to develop their understanding of drawing as a discipline.

Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
Apply art terminology as it specifically relates to works of art.
Demonstrate knowledge of art elements and principles of design.
Differentiate between the processes and materials used in the production of various works of art.
Critically interpret and evaluate works of art.
Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of arts on culture.
Core Objectives Communication skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and visual communication.

Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions.

Teamwork: Students will demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal and consider different points of view.

Social Responsibility: Students will demonstrate intercultural competency and civic knowledge by engaging effectively in local, regional, national and/or global communities.

Knowing your Tools: Graphite as a drawing medium.
Course outline
Silhouette, Profiles, Lines, and Contours.
Action lines

Exercises
Practice drawing action lines from either live poses or images in magazines of people
Trace your hand palm down and use for base to start drawing your hand.
Trace your hand palm up and use for base to start drawing your hand.

Homework due on Monday of Week Two:
Detailed drawing of your hand palm down showing every wrinkle, pore, hair, and vein/tendon.
Detailed drawing of your hand palm up showing every wrinkle, crease, and line.
Divide a sheet of paper into four sections. In each section draw action lines from either live poses or images in magazines of people


Week 2
Creating composition and framing
Still Drawing and Life Drawing
Drawing what you see
Structure and Shapes and Anatomy.

Exercises
Draw simplified people and/or objects in class as shapes.

Homework due on Monday of Week Three:
Four drawings (you can divide one page into quarters) of people or objects using simplified geometric shapes.

Week 3
Light, Shadow, and Shading
Different render techniques

Exercises
Draw basic objects using the different render methods (cross hatching, shading, scribbles, circlets, stippling, etc…)

Homework due on Monday of Week Four:
Use one of the render methods to create a finished work.

Week 4
Perspective
Drawing from photographs versus from life
How to critique work

Exercises
Start drawing an image using the grid method
Start drawing an image using the graphite transfer method

Homework due on Monday of Week Five:
Bring in a finished work started by using either the grid or graphite transfer method.

Week 5
This week covers Visual elements, the vocabulary of art: line, direction and movement, shape and mass, light, color, texture and pattern, space, perspective, time and motion.

Instructor Policies
Attendance Policy Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. Students with more than three absences from the course will receive an academic penalty (which is spelled out by the instructor).
Academic Honesty Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
